The artist uses mass produced goods to make sculptures that express feelings and themes of traditional Native art in a fun, quirky, yet interpretive fashion.
Local township called Imizamo Yethu located in the Hout Bay area in Cape Town, South Africa.
'Imizamo Yethu began as an informal squatter camp for the black
population in Hout Bay who could not afford, and (as a consequence of the
apartheid government) were not allowed, to purchase housing in the area. In
1989 the local government was forced to demarcate an area in which black
residents were allowed to build temporary shelters. This modest original
population has rapidly expanded to over 30 000 people since its
inception…. The resourceful spirits of the residents resulted in the
construction of make-shift shelters, store fronts and community centers. Local
entreprenures took advantage of the prefabricated and durable nature of
inexpensive shipping containers to house businesses such as food stalls, convenient
and clothing stores, craft sales, restaurants and beauty salons...'
