PRO/con: Brill Residence


Client—David and Lisa Brill
Site—A half acre lot in a gated community, with only half of the site buildable due to a steep drop off on the south side of the home; San Clemente, CA
Program— single family residence
Completion—Winter 1998

The home had some major geological conditions that made the design of the home very difficult to execute. There is a beautiful view on San Clemente and the ocean beyond from the south side of the home, and so the home was built around this aspect. Concepts of privacy versus the public interaction with the rest of the community was explored, along with the relationship with the surrounding environment. In the end design was rejected because of the unrealistic nature of the home for not following architectural guide lines.

This is a classic two-level PRO/con installation. It is situated next to a ski-slope and includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, living and dining, and a family room.

A Modern Primitive Hut




Phau and Jones' intention with their primitive hut was to design architecture for the hunter/gatherer,    someone who would scavenge and then recycle materials, and find ways to heighten the use and role of machine in architecture. Shipping containers took up the base of the home, with the addition of then current day, mass produced materials such as I-beams, glass aluminium, ramps and billboards. We questioned as a group how this concept of Phau and Jones' primitive hut would translate into our current times, and how the technology, manufactured items and mass production that is evident today would replace the items used for their version of the primitive hut.

Jones and Phau's primitive hut had an industrial theme to the objects used. They were items of popular demand for their time period, and we wanted to see what these objects would be like for the 21st century. For this small personal assignment, we brainstormed ideas of objects and materials that are mass produced today. The list was very large since the technology of today has dramatically changed in the past few decades. Items like cellphones, game consoles, laptops and television screens are examples that resonate from today's society as mass produced everyday objects which weren't around before.


Using one of Jones and Phau's primitive huts as inspiration, I designed a modern day primitive hut out of laptops, cellphones, pop cans, plastic bins, public signage, fluorescent bulbs, gaming devices a plasma screen TV and a treadmill. This new hut has many physical characteristics that are similar to Phau and Jones' hut, such as an overhanging attachment on the back wall, which in their case was a billboard but developed into a TV screen, a roofing component, a ramp element in the front and a box-like form in the centre. 

Although the times have changed there are still themes from Jones and Phau's primitive hut that can relate to our current society, and we were able to demonstrate this with this design.

Hesselink Guest Hut



In 1994 Wes Jones designed a living space that was meant to take up 360 acres of forest in a property located in High Sierra, California. The landscape of the area required the use of some sort of standard prefabricated device; something that would be strong, durable, inexpensive, and easily transportable by helicopter or truck. The answer to these needs was a shipping container.



The end result of this project was the Guest Hut, which were independant small cabins for guests, located in a forest environment. Each configuration of the container homes pertained to the environment in which it is situated. For example, the vertical elements that come from stacking the containers gives a sense of stability and security for a flat land region, where as in a steep and dangerous site the containers include overhanging elements that cover the rocky environment around. This special relationship that was designed for the building and its environment was a theory that Jones questioned later on regarding the primitive hut. He began to further question the relationship between the house and the wilderness. This inquiry of Jones was foreshadowing for his reflections on the primitive hut.


It is evident that the building has themes, such as industrial materials, that Jones uses later on in other projects, especially the primitive hut. The concept he had behind this project was very important to the transformation of the primitive hut. This project is also where the origin of the shipping container in his work came from. Jones learned the flexibilities and resourcefulness of the shipping container after working on this project, and therefore continued to stretch the object's use and design in later works.

Hot Rods, 'Souping-up' and Wes Jones



During the Great Depression, young car enthusiasts wanted to show that money was not the only means to gain automotive status and they began customizing cars, known as ‘glow jobs’ or ‘soup-ups’. It was in the 1940s that the term ‘hot rod’ became popularized. The automobiles were known for their power and performance, but were also a social statement of self-reliance, ingenuity and independence. 
Hot rods were born in the dry lake region of Southern California. A cult of backyard mechanics working with junkyard parts created streamlined, no non-sense racing cars for competitions. The hot rods not only had to be well equipped to compete on the courses laid out on nearby desert sand flats, but also had to be functional for everyday transport.  Most early hot rods were Ford Model T or Model A roadsters as they were cheap, lightweight and readily available. These basic automobiles were stripped of all non-essential parts, including fenders, running boards, ornaments and even their windshields. This editing process allowed for maximum weight reductions and aerodynamics. Coupes and Sedans were eventually used, but needed further surgery as they were generally much heavier in weight. Hot rods were fitted with large front tires in order to achieve a higher gear ratio, and consequently higher available speeds. In contrast, the front tires were standard size or smaller, decreasing wind resistance. Louvres —rows of slots —were cut into the hood, body and rear deck lid to aid in engine cooling and the release of trapped air. If the enthusiast decided to go further, flat aluminum discs could be placed on tires for additional streamlining. 

In 1932, the Ford flathead V8 engines were introduced and became the most popular choice for use in hot rods. These engines were mass produced in the millions, therefore they were inexpensive and plentiful. The design of the V8 engine also allowed for easy and varied enhancements. Common adjustments included the removal of the muffler, straightening of the exhaust pipes, and the addition of multiple carburetors. 

World War II marked the end of early hot rodding. However, in 1945, as the war came to a close, hot rodding exploded in America and emerged as one of the most dominant post-war fads. Young men were returning home with money as well as mechanical and metal working knowledge gained from their time in the army. Young car enthusiast now found themselves with the resources to build their dream cars. Hot rodders and fans gathered in dry lakes in California, while dangerous street racing became prevalent in other parts of the country. These illegal races, coupled with late night gatherings of young hot rodders, led to a negative public view of the subculture. Hot rods, along with rock and roll, became symbolic of the darker side of American youth. 

To reverse negative connotations, the first hot rod exhibition was held during January of 1948. The event was held at the National Guard Armory in Los Angeles and attracted 10 000 spectators. The first issues of the successful Hot Rod Magazine, established by Robert E. Peterson, were sold at the exhibition. The establishment of the ‘Southern California Timing Association’ (SCTA), as well as the ‘National Hot Rod Association’ (NHRA) worked to further diffuse the unfavourable image, and led to a civic-mindedness and cooperative relationship with the police authorities. Racing was now limited to organized, straight-line courses, known as drag strips. Enthusiasts became increasingly serious and began building vehicles meant solely for racing, and ‘street rods’ as well as customs emerged as sub-sets of the automobile culture. By the end of the 1950s, competition was fierce and top cars were only taken out for races or exhibitions. The junkyard parts used during the movement’s infancy were no longer adequate, and as a consequence demographics of hot rodding adjusted to an older, wealthier population. 

The 1960s marked a rebellion against elegant hot rods and the emergence of ‘muscle cars’—plain automobiles with huge amounts of power. The gas shortage of the 1970s resulted in the smaller ‘pony cars’. However, hot rods reemerged once again in the 1980s. There were two dominant groups keeping the hot rod culture alive, those driven by nostalgia and the young, primarily latino, car enthusiasts. The hot rod culture has evolved dramatically from its birth in the junkyards or Southern California, but hot rodding remains popular today.

The concept of “souping-up”, prevalent in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, has served as a central inspiration for Wes Jones in his approach to architecture. The primitive huts by Wes Jones and Peter Pfau are clear reflections of the deconstructive and additive processes present during the ‘souping-up’ of a basic car body (such as the Ford Model T). In the following clip Jones describes how his strategy in constructing the Stieglitz Residence is comparable to that of ‘souping-up’ an automobile.

Panorama Shipping Containters

Here is a larger scale version of the morphology of the use of shipping containers for the Primitive Hut. This gives a better perspective of the influence that shipping containers had on their work and the final design.

The idea behind the primitive hut was to use existing materials that are massed produced, and incorporate them into the design for a home, whose final form would consist of completely scavenged and recycled materials, similar to the work of a hunter or gatherer. Jones and Phau took on this ideal and decided on the use of a shipping container as the basis for their primitive hut design. Shipping containers come in various sizes, but they worked with the standard 20 ft standard ISO shipping container, which Jones had and continued to use in later projects for PRO/con. From the shipping container base, the home dwells into more stacking and collecting of parts to create a collage-like effect, and a primitive look. 

Irony can be found through this design because of the lack of typical primal materials to build the home. The word primitive is more often thought of as being natural, wild-like, and something taken from the Earth, rather than manufactured goods. However the ironic juxtaposition found in Jones and Phau's primitive hut, with its inclusion of wood logs and branches in each of their designs, develops a new way to consider the ideals of a primitive hut.

Wes Jones and Peter Pfau's Primitive Hut

Wes Jones’ preoccupation and fascination with shipping containers dates back to the 1980s. His interest in the utilization of this resource is a response to the number of unused shipping containers available worldwide. Wes saw the unique potential for them to be used as elements for refurbished homes. These ready- made durable blocks could be modified, dissected and added to depending on the client's particular needs and requirements. These additions may include ramps, shades, photovoltaic panels, HVAC systems, furniture, porches, pools and struts —becoming a collage-like exercise in an attempt to customize an otherwise standard and impersonal container. 

Wes’ earliest proposal was the Hesselink Guest House —also known as the “Container House”. In this project he showcased his unique drawing style, using exploded axonometric drawings to depict the building as a kit or assemblage of parts. From this initial project, Jones continued to expand on the idea of shipping container structures. Within 4 years he produced a series of proposals known as ‘Primitive Huts’. These huts were built as models and were a direct reference to Marc- Antoine Laugier’s 'Essay on Architecture'. Laugier’s essay argues that architecture must derive all its forms from basic requirements of structural stability. This concept is embraced by Wes Jones and Peter Pfau’s ‘Primitive Huts’. Jones’s proposal, communicated through the huts, is an architecture for the hunter-gatherer, for someone who seeks to scavenge materials and to subsequently recycle them without the support of market infrastructure for their livelihood. Jones continues this type of work today as he has developed a series of container based homes referred to as PRO/con (program/container).

The Purpose: 

The concept of the origin, especially the origin of architecture, is fundamentally flawed in nature- and the search for said origin is often futile. Peter Pfau and Wes Jones acknowledged this truth, but chose to delve into their search regardless. It is in this exploration of the idea of an architectural origin in which the Primitive Huts and their purpose were conceptualized. 

The Primitive Huts have a dual purpose: 
  1. To elevate the machine and its role as a dwelling to the status of architecture 
  2. To subvert architecture and urban form in their project

Through these fundamental goals, Pfau and Jones set out to question the validity of the origins of architecture present in the form of the primitive hut, while simultaneously exploring its relationships to the machine and the spacial structure of suburbia. They chose to challenge suburbia, without attacking it. The interpretation of the ambiguous origin of architecture lead them to rather revitalize and improve the concept of building in suburbia. This process was referred to as “souping up”, an upgrade to the body of suburbia, with obvious reference to the “souping up” of hot-rods in the automobile industry. Pfau and Jones looked to add meaning and expression of the individual to the mass produced, repetitive housing in modern suburban settings.

Construction: 

The shipping containers used in the construction of the primitive huts may be used similarly to lego blocks, as they can easily stack to form more complex and versatile compositions. They are essentially economical steel and aluminum building blocks. The shipping container is extremely versatile as it may be used for both permanent and impermanent dwellings, while providing ease of transportation.Because shipping containers were designed to withstand extreme weather conditions during travel, they are watertight and built to resist hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes, therefore they are not only inexpensive, but also exceedingly durable. 

The construction of the Primitive Huts consists of standard cube shipping containers. The containers were then customized and improved upon with the addition of a series of elements. Logs, twigs, I-beams, glass and aluminum were added to perform the supporting functions of the structure.The Huts were then customized through the dissection, modification and additions which were particular to the clients needs. Some of these additions include: ramps, shades, photovoltaic panels, HVAC systems, porches, pools and struts. The Primitive Huts were part ready-made , part customized collage. Jones' distinctive drawing style with annotations and exploded axonometrics conveying the house as a kit, portrayed his view of the construction as an assemblage of parts.

The Primitive Hut Narrative and its Purpose

The primitive hut narrative is based upon the concept of the origin. In the search for the origin of architecture is the search for some sense of meaning or authority in the work. In times of crisis, architecture tends to return to the idea of the origin and the contemplation of the first building, also known as the primitive hut. The primitive hut is used as a fundamental point of reference in the speculation and contemplation on the essence and meaning of the building.

The purpose of the primitive hut, or the notion of the first building, is used as a sort of justification, the first principle out of which modern radical forms are founded. The subject is the result of a collective memory, kept alive through legends and rituals. 

The first habitation of man, it is generally held, were makeshift props against some rock face, which the first men devised to protect themselves against weather and various enemies. 

The appeal of the “primitive” differs from milieu to millieu, but there has been a constant interest in the primitive hut throughout history. It is a concept which has been displayed by all people at all times and has not been drastically altered from place to place or from time to time.  This hut has been communicated in a variety of ways. Some are content to portray this hut through drawings or engravings, but there is never an attempt to suggest where this original dwelling may be found and excavated.

Laugier on the Primitive Hut Story





“He is in need of a place to rest. On the banks of a quietly flowing brook he notices a stretch of grass; he is drawn there and, stretched out at leisure on this sparkling carpet, he thinks of nothing less than enjoying the gift of nature; he lacks nothing, he does not wish for anything. But soon the scorching heat of the sun forces him to look for shelter. A nearby forest draws him to its cooling shade; he runs to find refuge in its depth and there he is content
...
He leaves and is resolved to make good by his ingenuity the careless neglect of nature. He wants to make himself a dwelling that protects but does not bury him. Some fallen branches in the forest are the right material for his purpose; he chooses four of the strongest, raises them upright and arranges them in a square; across the top he lays four other branches; on these he hoists from two sides yet another row of branches which, inclining towards each other, meet at their highest point. He then covers this kind of roof with leaves so tightly packed that neither sun nor rain can penetrate. This man is housed. Admittedly, the heat will make him feel uncomfortable in this house which is open on all sides but soon he will fill in the space between two points and feel secure

by imitating the natural process, art was born. All the splendors of architecture ever conceived have been modeled on the little rustic hut I have just described. It is by approaching the simplicity of the first model that fundamental mistakes are avoided ad true perfection is achieved. The pieces of wood set upright have given us the idea of the column, the pieces placed horizontally on the top of them the idea of the entablature and the inclining pieces forming the roof the idea of the pediment. This is what all masters of art have recognized”. 

Laugier believed that it was these three components which are essential to the perfect composition. This simplicity makes it easier to distinguish between what is essential and what is not. Components which are essential are inherently beautiful, those which are necessary provide license but it is those added in caprice which present flaws. By referring back to the primitive hut one can only choose the elements which are essential, and when they are suitably placed and formed within the composition, perfection may be achieved. The placement of these parts must ensure that not a single one could be taken away without the building collapsing. The close relationship between members is what makes each one essential, and therefore beautiful.

Architecture is founded on simple nature, as nature is what indicates the rules. This principle is exemplified in the story of the primitive hut. The narrative describes a primitive man seeking shelter and consequently building due to necessity for survival. The product of this man’s effort is described as the basis of architecture. Three simple elements compose the hut: 
  1. The column
  2. The entablature
  3. The pediment

Laugier wished for a more rigorous approach and understanding in the use of ornament. In order to achieve this Laugier looked to the absolute roots of history. His goal was to find the source of perfect beauty, which he discovered in nature. His story of the primitive hut, describing this founding of architecture, has little factual basis, but is rather concerned with function and structure. The primitive hut represents the first architectural idea.

The Origin, Architecture and the Primitive Hut



The concept of the origin is defeated in its expansion to understanding. In order to understand the origin, one must study it in reference to similar phenomena, which goes against the concept and innate nature of the origin and relates it to a necessarily prior existence. 

The issue of the origin is an idealist dilemma, and it is therefore embarrassed when exposed to the public domain. The idea that the origin is an axiom, a self-evident phenomena that requires no proof, results in its misunderstanding. Axiomatic beginning are found in “self-evidence”, a chain of reduction which eventually arrives at the axiom and compels it to be the limit, and thus the beginning. It is so basic, that it cannot be connected to prior existence and is consequently beyond proof. The intention behind the axiom contradicts its definition as an irreducible truth. The absolute, or axiomatic, limit is the words that compose the system and reduce reality for the particular language. 

The concept of the origin and its uncertainty is the unstable fulcrum on which architecture balances. There is an innate ambiguity in the nature of architecture, is it art or utility? design or building? ordinance or shelter? communication or being? In the midst of this indecision, one can always orient architecture and its battle for precedence in the origin. 

Architecture has the capacity to be straightforward in its relationship to building, but it finds its complexity in its state of constant reversal of terms and instability of ordering. The origin of architecture is unclear due to its simultaneous existence as an abstract institution and physical fact, both of which claim an independent origin. In the narrative of the primitive hut, building precedes architecture; It was the hut first, which then became architecture. However, this story is flawed in its betrayal of a prior sense of architecturality by which the hut is recognized. “Which came first? The hut or the idea?”

Architecture is different from building due to its function— it is an addition or superlative and is marked by its neglect for utility. However, it is in the term utility that the ground condition for distinguishing meaning is found. The notion of this absence, the fact that architecture feels incomplete, is the vehicle for architecture’s continual reinvention. The supplementary nature of architecture becomes the means by which we essentially understand the concept of the building itself — it becomes the reading of the building in its pre-architectural or non-architectural condition, as well as in its structuration and context. The presence of architecture is an unnecessary and inessential superlative and “supplementary” condition as it is not the building itself, but rather the architectural experience paired with the structure. The attempt to distinguish or establish a hierarchical relationship between art and utility within architecture is as ambiguous and futile as the search for the origin itself. 

The architectural experience of a building is founded in the expectation that a building will be meaningful or an expression of some intention, where the intention bridges the distance to said meaning. The origin is central in the structure of meaning as it provides formal reference and comparative development which relates to the two sense of the origin: the origin as a source and as beginning of existence. 

Architecturality is essentially empty and meaningless without an object to frame, as it independently  posses no presence. Architecturality is a verbal noun, an attitude, it has no internal ability to generate form out of a void. As a consequence of this inability to make something from nothing, form must be provided, and the void may then be filled by pragmatic insertion.  

Reference for classical architecture was always found in nature. The mythologies and forms in nature is what architecture was meant to conceptually represent. In this case, architectural meaning was not found in culture or topology, but rather in the natural world and the paradoxical integration of nature into object. 

Within the specific architectural object, meaning is generated by the compositional development of the object from an original state. The complete context is encompassed within the process by which the object manifests its specificity. The compositional design process creates a meaning whose principal attributes elaboration. 

Architecture gains much of its richness and depth from the interplay of two positions regarding the standard of use and the value of its paired substitute. Architecture gathers meaning from focus and expression of its intention as opposed to the ambiguous use-as-origin. The utility of a building is what ultimately distinguishes between building and art.
